Saturdays and Sundays are free for your own activity.

Students staying at Núpur, can climb up Óþoli mountain, 800 metres above sea level, where there is a breathtaking view over the fjord and the picturesque fishing village of Þingeyri. Alternatively, walk from Núpur along the shore to Skagi, or over to Ingjaldssandur. Interested in bird watching? The loon/diver breeds just 500m from Núpur.

From Hótel Núpur you can take a walk to Skrúður, the oldest Icelandic botanical garden and close to the hotel there is a church you can visit.

The employees of Hótel Núpur are happy to make suggestions that suit your interests: Horse riding, kayaking, fjord-fishing, 4x4 (SUV) day trips, all these are within your reach. Make sure to bring hiking boots and outdoor clothing that is appropriate for the changeable weather, but be aware of the fact that clothes for horse riding must be disinfected when coming to the country.

From Ísafjörður, you might want to take a trip to Vigur island or a one or two day trip to Hornstrandir. The Hornstrandir Nature reserve lies to the north of Ísafjörður, across Ísafjarðardjúp. The area can only be reached by boat. The last permanent residents left in the 1960s, and now nature is taking over old cultivated land. If you go, you will be in tranquil wilderness - no cars, no roads, and no telephones! For more information go to www.westfjords.is or www.vesturferdir.is.

Our community

"It is a delight to be here, utterly unique. The best thing about it is that I have no idea how to describe it to anyone once I leave - it defies easy description! I will encourage all faculty and students I know to come here to study and conduct their research."
Marc L. Miller CMM Instructor, Professor, Marine Affairs University of Washington, Seattle, USA
